Embroidered Book Covers

When I saw this post on Jillian Tamaki's blog, I didn't hesitate to pre-order copies of these two books...Emma and The Secret Garden. (I showed some restraint and didn't get Black Beauty!)

Aren't the covers wonderful? The backs too!

I've always loved embroidered book covers and these modern versions are a delightful twist on the historical art form.

And the special surprise?

They spared no expense and printed the back sides of the embroideries on the inside cover!

You can read more about the launch of these books on this post on Jillian's blog.

Penguin has engaged Rachell Sumpter to embroider three new book covers in the Threads series: Check out A Wind in the Willows, Little Women and The Wizard of Oz on Rachell's Flickr photostream.

And should you be inspired to create your own, don't forget that Feeling Stitchy is having a Covered in Stitches contest, all entries due on November 7, 2011. I wish I had the time to make one myself, but since I don't, I am enjoying following all the entries posted here on Flickr.

I've always loved the idea of embroidering a book cover in the silk and goldwork styles from the 17th and 18th centuries in England. And Abe books has linked to some beautiful examples that are for sale.

And last week at Winterthur, the library shared this dear little, tent-stitched prayer book of Ann Flower that is in their collection...

One day I hope to embroider a cover. I'm just waiting for the right book...

P.S. I'm working on my Breakfast at Tiffany's piece...and hit a bit of a road block with the abdomen of the butterfly. More on that another day.

Gorgeous!~ I'll check all of these links out.
I'd love to see how the petit point cover is bound. I have a petit point wallet insert 90% finished and the leather wallet to put it in , need to get that out! Thanks for reminding me.

These are lovely...and don't we love our books embellished... journals, needlebooks etc. I remember as a kid in gradeschool we had to cover our books with brown paper to protect them but then everyone embellished them with crayons and markers... Susie gave me a seam journal and I'm making a CQ cover for it before Wichita.. I love this post.. Hugs Ger

How amazing. The inside is the cherry on top, for sure. Thanks for sharing them.

What fun!!! And ever so clever. When you have time, you should try it. I'll bet your version would be the best!

I just don't get around much because I have never seen these. These covers are wonderful, but I especially like the prayer book. There is something about it that soothes.

Oh My. I have never seen these before so I am grateful for you sharing. The stitching of vintage eras is so special and beautiful.

I am sorry your butterfly is giving you difficulties...

Love the book coveres. I think it could be fun to create an embroidered kindle/ipad cover with element of some favorite books.

I have had so many favorite books it would be hard to choose one to stitch. A book I loved 2 years ago is not the same as one I loved at age 10. A prayer journal would be a good choice as it is something I would always be doing.
Gerry is right about covering books in brown paper and everyone writing on them, I had forgotten doing that.

Que c'est difficile les traductions ! Mais j'aime bien les couvertures des livres surtout le dernier. J'essaierai pour l'un de mes livres mais impossible pour le concours. Je n'ai pas compris sur quoi tu travailles. Pardon ! Bisous et très bonne soirée

Wasn't she brave to allow the back of her work to be used as well!
