Transitions and Boxer Shorts

This morning I sat down to write a post about some of the projects I've been working on for the last month and instead all I can think about is the difficulty I'm having with some of my life's transitions. They make me want to fold in on myself and reflect.

Not only am I transitioning from a pre-Christmas hectic pace to the wonderful downtime that occurs after...but I'm transitioning from one year to the next, and transitioning from life with my Mom to life after my Mom, and there are a few other family challenges causing us all to transition from what used to be to where we are now. Everyone handles transitions differently and at different speeds which causes "transition traffic". Some of it good, some of it less so but I guess there's comfort in knowing we're all out in the traffic together.

Just knowing that, psychologically, I'm in a reflective place helps to ground me a bit so I'm grateful to put it down on the blog, for what it's worth...

Now, to transition to something more fun.

One of my favorite presents we gave this year was to my brother, John.

Every year we exchange names by FAMILY -- this year, Jim, Jack and myself were preparing gifts for my brother John's family.

This Spring, Jim and my brother will be taking a class at L'Academie de Cuisine (a chef school located nearby) -- our gift to my brother was his enrollment in a cooking class to make sushi! That being said there was nothing for him to "open" on Christmas night so I decided to make him a pair of boxer shorts -- out of sushi fabric.

This was my first time using a pattern from Timber Lane Press and my first time making boxer shorts!

Well, I LOVED the pattern AND the shorts!

And I can't wait to make more...and to eat that sushi that Jim and John will learn how to make.

What a fabulous gift! My sister Laurel got me a leather journal - I was speechless. It is something I have always wanted but would never think to splurge on myself. I've never told her I wanted one, but there you go - sister's intuition.

My dad always impressed upon me that the only certain thing in life is that it will change. I feel for you making your way through this transition. I don't look forward to the day I am finding my way down that same road. Thanks for the honesty.

I had a very hard time letting go of 2001. It was the year Will died and I just knew I could not go into the new year and leave him behind in the old year. I understand your feelings so well.

I have in the past made lots of boxer shorts. They are fun because they are so easy and you can use so many goofy fabrics on them.

Blessings to you & your guys!

Well, at 57 I have come to realize that everyday is a transition of some sort. That's how the mantra "take it one day at a time" came to be!

Your boxers were a terrific idea and from the look on his face, he was happy!

I love making boxers, lounge pants..just wish I had more time.
