The Road to Ribbonwork

Sometimes I dream of a project...and it might take me years to collect the skills, supplies and ideas for that dream to become a reality.

And no, my dream project isn't a dress like this. This is just a dreamy dress that happens to have beautiful ribbonwork.

See, I've been wanting to improve my skills at finessing and manipulating ribbons.

So, in five weeks I'll have the opportunity to travel to Connecticut to meet Maureen Greeson (Woohoo!) , founder of The Adventure in Crazy Quilting (sorry, it's full...) and owner of that great online store Maureen's Vintage Acquisitions (vintage heaven!).

Who will be hosting a Ribbonwork Workshop with Candace Kling, author of the The Artful Ribbon (pinch me!).

I know, I know. First Stumpwork with Jane Nicholas and now Ribbonwork with Candace Kling??

Lest you think I travel from amazing workshop to amazing workshop....it just so happens...that, even though this year has been a bust for the economy, it's been a boom for me finding great teachers. It doesn't happen like this very often so you just have to jump at the opportunities when they come along.

Candace has asked that we bring any examples of antique ribbonwork that we might have to share with the rest of the class. But I want you all to be in on it too.

So over the next four Mondays, I'll post about ribbonwork.

And by the time I get to the workshop on November 4, we'll all be in the ribbonwork spirit together!

And if any of you own a piece of antique ribbonwork , I'd love to see it.

Post it on your blog and leave a comment on this post or one of the Monday ribbonwork posts and I'll include a link for all of us to enjoy.

P.S. I think Maureen may still have space available for the workshop...check it out here...

P.P.S. Alas, I do not own these beautiful gowns shown here today...they are all from this gorgeous book.

Enjoy!

  2. OMG - you are so lucky! If money weren’t an issue (and if I weren’t already flying out there in April), I would hop on a plane and join you in that class. I love ribbonwork, especially vintage. Here’s a post I did of a vintage lingerie case I have with beautiful ribbonwork on it: http://cathyscrazybydesign.blogspot.com/2009/03/vintage-ribbonwork-lingerie-case.html
Those dresses in your post are to-die-for, too!

  3. Good for you! Isn't it great to get a chance to learn something you always wanted to know "how to"!? The pictures are beautiful, real inspiration, I can see why you are so pleased about your chance to learn this.

  4. Lucky you! Have a wonderful time at this class! I have her book and use it all the time! Love it! The hard part for me is finding good ribbons to use. Northern Arizona isn't exactly a Mecca for the needle arts! But I'll bet some of those wonderful stores you've written about in the past have just the thing! Can't wait to see what you create!

  11. I'm intrigued to see what you do with your new skills when you've got them...

Especially since it has taken me more than ten years to get started on one project I've been thinking about!

  13. I have purchased Jane's Beetle book so now I will have to look into Candice's Artful Ribbon. I have become so interested in Crazy Quilting, I follow the Pin Tangle Blog. What great opportunities you have had this year. How I wish I could fit in your suitcase and sit on sholder during these classes.
