Family Ripples

Just last week, I finished Jack's ripple afghan that I had started...*ahem*...a couple of years ago.

I ended up needing to find additional yarn to make it longer since Jack had outgrown the original amount of yarn I thought I would need for his blanket.

He loves it. He wraps it around him when he's studying, he sleeps with it, and he drags it down to the basement when he plays video games.

When I was about 9 years old, my grandmother made me this pink afghan...

So this picture of the two of us is pretty special to me.

My pink blanket stayed on my bed when I was little. It went with me to college. It went with me as I traveled around the world. And when I got married, I put it on my bed and it's been on my bed ever since.

Never underestimate the power of a blanket made for you with love.

Happy weekend everyone!

Amazing how you have managed to keep it in such good shape. I have all the afghans my grandmother made for us and I am always repairing them! Between moths and toes getting stuck..........sigh. But they are special.

My cousin's grandmother made afghans for all of us (she only had one grandchild so she adopted all of my Grandmother's grands too! Anyway, we got to pick our colors and I picked black/white/gray because I felt that they were not fashion colors and would last through time. The colors have and so has the afghan! Mine wasn't ripple though. I was a rebel there too and picked a different pattern.
Is Jack a Steelers fan? I guess, at the moment he would be an unhappy Steelers fan.

This is a fabulous post. I have all the doilies my grandmother made for me...all pink I might add, and the afghan my mom made, and the embroidered items my real mother made, though not for me.

I can see Jack wrapping up in it. That's the way Ky is with the quilt I made for him 10 years ago. He even patched it himself when I tried to..."give" it away.

We are having a snow storm. I should be home sewing, but my conscience wouldn't let me, darn that girl!

Gifts you can wrap up in are the best! I still have the afghan that my grandmother made for me too, though it sits on my bed at my Mom's now for when I visit!

Your son has such a nice smile. My Granny made those afghans too. So did my husbands Grandmother

Glad you got his blanket done. The picture is so fun.
I had a homemade blanket also and so did my kids. They are wonderful treasured memories.

It just goes to show you... if it's worth having, it's worth waiting for. I hope Jack's afghan wraps him in as many happy memories as yours does!

Great to have it finished and see Jack so pleased with it!

Defintely! Each of my children has a blanket I made for them and in times of stress they always default to the blankets rather than duvets!

well done for finishing it already and it was good to leave it till he had grown into it or the blanket would have been too short, as in the side bar quote.
tell me please, it's crocheted right? i don't crochet, i knit, i'll have to look for a similar pattern for a knit ripple as it's lovely.

Like you, I have a pink and ivory-white "ripple" (we call it zig-zag) afghan - it looks identical to yours! Mine was made by my aunt. She made each of us a zig-zag afghan for our high school graduation, and then another one in our chosen colors for our weddings. I never got married, so I only have the one! My zig-zag went with me to college, and was a life-saver in 150-year-old dorm rooms with old windows and old radiators in the middle of Kansas winters. Then, it moved with me to my first apartment, then to my house, and it is always folded on the end of my bed, even though it doesn't "match" my decor. I wouldn't be without it!

Auntie is still crocheting, despite being 94, blind in one eye, and sporting a manufactured shoulder! She spends the year making hundreds of winter scarves for various orphanages and homeless shelters. I think her crocheting keeps her young!

Thanks for the memory! And the wonderful pictures!

Love those photos, Susan. Interesting how handcrafted stuff brings to mind the maker, isn't it? I treasure a ripple afghan made by my mom, that's for sure. Is yours crocheted? Are those Jack's school colors? Family heirlooms are priceless......
