Lacy Petals

Yesterday I finished stitching the 15th lacy stumpwork petal for my Breakfast at Tiffany's block.

As I was stitching the petals, I was worried that the couched wire outlining the petals was going to be too strong compared to the laciness of the petal...

Overall, I think they'll be great and the delicacy of the lace of the petal really comes through which I'm happy about.

One thing I did notice was that I need a much more precise pair of scissors...like these used for hardanger...in order to clip all those threads super close. A macro lens is good for pointing that stuff out.

So...as the Mad Hatter said in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland after the Red Queen had imprisoned and forced him to become her personal Hatter...

"It's good to be working at my trade again."

If you're wondering what my Breakfast at Tiffany's project is...you can read prior posts on the topic here and the originating post describing the inspiration behind the block here.

Happy weekend everyone!

P.S. We are preparing for Hurricane Irene. Though our house is up high on a hill, our little historic mill town of Ellicott City is situated right on the Patapsco River. It flooded in 1972 during Hurricane Agnes so keep your fingers crossed for us this weekend that this doesn't happen again...(that's the second floor of the building showing above the flood)

I have my fingers crossed as hard as possible, consistent with stitching, that the hurricane doesn't flood you. Keep safe, above all.

Your needle work is always a treat to see.

Love, hugs and prayers to you and yours, and everyone else on the east coast where Irene is going to go.

Beautiful work as always:) Good luck with the storm...fingers crossed all goes well.

My favourite small scissors are 4 inch embroidery by Gingher made in Italy...super sharp. I bought them at a needlecraft show and I wish I had bought a larger size as well.

I'm watching the hurricane news all the time... We have so many stitching friends in the path... My very favorite scissors for truely fine intricate cutting are the ones sold to men who tie flies.. they will indeed cut a hair on a gnat... Hugs G.

I remember when it flooded and seeing all of the pictures on the news.

We are also preparing up here in Central Maryland. Filling up the bathtub with water as we are on well and septic in addition to all of our other preparations.

Sigh...

gerry is right...the scissors at a fly fishing site are way less costly and have some wicked sharp tips!

I didn't realise you were in the path of it. Hope you stay safe.

Love the petals!

Hoping for the best for you with the hurricane. The petals are lovely. I will have to look for the fly tying scissors Gerry mentioned.

Beautiful flowers!

I'm going to get the Kai UltraSharp scissors for Stumpwork from http://www.alisoncoleembroidery.com.au/supplies.html.

I haven't used them before, but they sound good! Maybe you could start a discussion on Stitchin Fingers on the best stumpwork scissors (pronounced "skissors")

Agnes is the one that also flooded my town (Bassett, VA). I remember over 5 feet of water in our basement. It was horrible!
