Royal Threads

I absolutely love this photograph taken by the talented Tim Walker of Helena Bonham Carter in the March 2011 Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair!

The Diet Coke, the chippy nail polish, the crooked crown, the shabby sash...

This amazing actress is playing yet another queen after her great performance as the Red Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. She is playing Queen Elizabeth to George VI in the movie, The King's Speech, which I am SO excited to see this weekend...

Seems like there is so much talk of royalty these days with the impending marriage of William and Kate. I have to admit I get swept up by it all and thought that this modern wedding sampler designed by Jacqui Pearson of Granny Knits, to be published in the upcoming March issue of UK mag Cross Stitcher, was kind of fun...

I don't plan to stitch it but it's cute and a far cry from the more formal samplers I've seen in the past...like these two that were stitched for Charles and Diane courtesy of Linens and Royals blog....

Beth Russell also created this needlepoint design to honor Will and Kate's big day:

And Mr. X Stitch and Subversive Stitcher created this design for cross stitch...

If you have any pictures of vintage royal wedding samplers, I'd love to see them.

I remember seeing some very old ones of Victoria and Albert and even Queen Elizabeth I but couldn't find them in time for this post.

The weather is warming and the birdsong has returned. Who needs Punxsutawney Phil...just walk outside!

What a cool photo...Needs a caption "How to wear a crown out of plumb with aplomb" I have already met two women wearing replicas of THE engagement ring which they bought on a TV shopping chanel... The samplers are great.. I will watch for old ones... Gerry K.

Gosh I love that Vanity Fair picture..too much fun!

Aren't the older samplers beautiful. I think the English take their Royalty more serious than the most recent "unofficial" ones, but then this is not the usual royal couple.

We are 50 degrees today, but no sun. I think that little rodent is still sleeping in...I sent him peanut butter sandwiches.
xx, Carol

Susan, you will LOVE The King's Speech. It is SO well done. Firth and Bonham Carter are both perfectly cast... Love all the samplers, but especially the older ones...

Helena Bonham Carter seems to go for interesting, challenging and varied roles, doesn't she!

WOW, the picture is great. And she makes such a good Queen in The King's Speech. I'm sure you'll love it.

I love Helena Bonham Carter! She was morbidly awesome in Sweeny Todd also. In my opinion I like the more traditional samplers better, but the newer one is more fun!

The King's Speech is wonderful; you'll enjoy it! Gosh, I'll bet there are folks still stitching on that sampler with the dragon...lots of stitches on there. Good old Phil saw his shadow here and sure enough, we had a dash of snow this morning. Bleh!

Somewhere amongst all the bazillions of things I just moved into my lovely new house, I have the cover of the actual BBC Radio Times which came out when Chas and Di got married -- it has some lovely embroidery around the edges and the official portrait of them in the center. Now where did I put that thing?!?!..........
